Welcome to this weeks Featured Blogger, Rhonda who writes Down to Earth, which is this months number #1 in the Top 100 Australian Women Bloggers list. Well done Rhonda, and thank you for sharing a bit more about you and your blog.
When did you start your blog?
I started Down to Earth in August 2007. I started the simple|green|frugal co-op in October 2008.
Why did you start blogging?
I had written the beginnings of a book on simple living and couldn’t get anyone to publish it. I thought what I had written was interesting and needed airing, so I started the blog, not really knowing what I was in for. Now the blog is being turned into a book.
Describe your blog in 20 words or less
It’s a blog about living simply and being content and fulfilled doing that.
What are your 5 must have tools for blogging?
Definitely my camera, photoshop for resizing, blogger, google and a cup of tea.
What is your favourite part of being a blogger?
Being able to press “publish” and have what I’ve written potentially read by thousands of people.
What has been the biggest thing you have learnt since starting your blog?
Don’t take the stats too seriously.
If you could start again, what would you do differently?
I would start off with my gmail email and not my yahoo one. I can’t for the life of me work out how to change my login mail.
What has been your blog’s biggest achievement?
Getting a New York literary agent and a book deal.
What advice would do you have for new chick bloggers?
When you start, blog every day. Nothing will restrict your growth as much as inconsistent posting will.
Decide what you want – a personal blog just for you, your family and friends, or an interesting blog that many people read. If it’s a personal one, don’t follow any rules, do what you want to do. If you want a popular blog, take photos, write what you think is interesting, be generous, be consistent and write well.
Do you (or do you plan to) make any income from your blog?
I started off with Adsense and made quite a bit of money but stopped it because I thought it interfered too much with the flow and look of my blog. Now I take sponsor buttons which are proving to be successful. I also picked up a job writing a monthly column for a national magazine – Burke’s Backyard.
What future goals do you have for your blog?
Just to keep it fresh and interesting.
Who are your 5 favourite chick bloggers and why?
My absolute favourite is Cold Antler Farm because Jenna is such a fine writer.
And these because they write about a lifestyle I admire.
Heather – Beauty that moves
Kendra – A Sonoma Garden
Jewels – Eyes of Wonder
