Brands are really focusing on looks to enhance and empower women| Source: Glamour UK

Fashion is forever changing. And over the past few years, party-glam mixed with big comfort has been at the forefront of style.

During the pandemic, we found ourselves wanting to stay stylish but be comfortable. If 2021 was about getting back in the game, 2022 is going to see us truly putting ourselves out there – according to the power women setting the shopping agenda at Matches Fashion, Net-a-Porter and Farfetch. “The joy of dressing up has quickly moved into the new sexy trend,” asserts Liane Wiggins, head of womenswear at Matches. “Brands are really focusing on looks to enhance and empower women and make the customer feel positive, but always true to themselves.”

Think vivid colours, bold print silhouettes and fun accessories. As Lianne Wiggins, head of womenswear at MATCHESFASHION, says we’re living in “the anything-goes mood of now.” Wild and adventurous but also basic and chic will lead the way, and there’s room for people to comfortably sit in the middle.

While runway shows are still influential, now more than ever the latest fashion trends stem from social media. Here’s a look at some of the biggest fashion trends we expect to see in 2022.

Bold Colours

Bold, brave brights are here to stay as we continue to embrace fantasy fashion and experiment with eclectic colours and unique prints more than ever before.

Libby Page, senior market editor at NET-A-PORTER

Vibrant colours make people feel good and this year’s fashion is all about fun and enjoyable styling. Expect lots of mood-boosting patterns and bright hues promoting an air of positivity. NET-A-PORTER reports it’s “seen phenomenal increases YoY on sales of brightly coloured goods” – and we can only envision an increase though-out 2022. Expect to see plenty of purples and violets with Pantone naming ‘Very Peri’ as the colour of the year for 2022.

Sustainability

I expect 2022 is going to be all about ethical and sustainable fashion.

Celebrity stylist Kat Eves

As with most industries, the future is eco-friendly and fashion is no different. Set to eclipse the fast fashion industry over the coming years, the resale market is now valued at more than A$22 billion. Many luxury brands are making moves in the pre-loved market. The rise of high fashion resale sites such as Valentino Vintage is now offering shoppers luxury resale items at their fingertips.

Other brands like LVMH teamed up with tech companies like Security Matters to transition to more sustainable practices. This trend is in its infancy as big brands and consumers adapt – sustainable fashion will only continue to grow in 2022.

Bralettes

Seen on the runways with baggy jeans and low-hung skirts, we expect this fashion trend to be all the rage in spring 2022.

Fashion Magazine

Making their way from the home to the business space, Vogue says the “bra top as a shirt is a micro-trend belonging to our post-pandemic tastes for subtle sultriness” and it’s “sticking around for another season” this year.

A product of fashion becoming more daring this year, the bra top or bralette will make its way further into the city as more people are keen to take risks a be more liberal in the workplace. Bringing modernity to tailored silhouettes, expect a rise in the-bra-as-a-shirt trend with triangle tops pairing with menswear-inspired smart suits and bralettes and crops matching with sleek pencil skirts.

Mini Skirts

There’s a combination of generational desire to go back to a time in fashion when it was fun and mindless.

Emmy Award–winning costume designer Zerina Akers

Celebrity stylist and award-winning designer Zerina Akers told BAZAAR.com the mini skirt comeback is a mix of nostalgia and the desire for feel-good inspired fashion. “There’s a group of us who are super nostalgic, and then there’s this new younger generation that’s exploring it and are inspired by these archival images of pop stars,” she told the site.

As the Y2K style revival is in full swing, the latest early 2000s trend to resurface recently is the miniskirt. Straight from the archives, Harpers Bazaar hints that the “mini trend may have all started with the proliferation of tennis skirts this summer on Gen Z social feeds”. While the miniskirt is certainly doing the rounds on social media, it was likely the micro-mini skirts in the Miu Miu Spring 2022 collection that truly marked the return of the trend staple.
