The internet’s favourite new bag is a little bit devilish

Viral moments in fashion can feel like a stampede after deathly calm. A canonical example? The notorious Miu Miu micro mini—so large was its impact on the fashion world compared to its teeny, tiny length. It debuted on the label’s spring/summer 2022 runway, back in October 2021: but it wasn’t until late February of 2022 that the wave crested, and suddenly it was slung on the hips of celebrities from Saweetie to Nicole Kidman, gracing the editorial pages of Vogue Australia, i-D,Vanity Fair, and more. It was a dam bursting: suddenly, we were saturated with images upon images of The Skirt.  Not that that’s always the state of play: for example, the bag that’s currently taking over social media has been a hot commodity from its very inception. Designed by Breanna Box and Peter Dupont, of the glassware label Heven, the Coperni Swipe bag debuted on the autumn winter 22’/’23 runway in February, to almost instant acclaim.  The couple started glass blowing during the pandemic, as they explained to British Vogue. “Arnaud and Sébastien [the founder and creative director of Coperni] had their eyes on us for a little while,” the New York-based multi-hyphenates told the publication. “They DM-ed us, that then turned into a Zoom call, [and] then we were designing the bags.” Gigi Hadid first wore the piece on the runway, paired with a rosette-strewn pink dress. It contains all the elements necessary for virality: it’s eye-catching and unusual, with a touch of avant-garde in its glass fabrication and a dash of tongue-in-cheek humour in the devil horns that project from its handle. A statement piece— but one that isn’t limited to one aesthetic mode. It could just as well translate as an accessory to a simple black sheath or play counterpoint to a cottagecore ensemble; it can swing alongside an evening gown, as Doja Cat proved on the Grammys red carpet, or sit pretty with a linen pants and shirt combination as seen on Kylie Jenner this week.  Image credit: Getty Image credit: Instagram.com/kyliejenner It’s not the first Coperni piece to set the internet alight in recent times: some version of the long-sleeved, neon-hued wraparound crop top from the label’s spring/summer ’22 collection has now been donned by Paloma  Elsesser, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid—and, most recently, with great panache by Rihanna, as part of her resolutely bump-baring maternity style streak.  Image credit: courtesy Coperni One thing is still in question: will the bag achieve the holy grail of virality and be blessed with its own Instagram account à la the Miu Miu set? It’s yet to be seen.  Sign up to the Vogue newsletter Subscribe to become a Vogue VIP and receive monthly magazine delivery, digital edition access, VIP event invitations, insider content, exclusive offers from our luxury partners and more.
